Much of the history of women on Grounds has been hiding in plain sight. Their journey to UVA followed a path of reluctant acceptance, each door slowly opened largely in hopes of staving off full coeducation – but in the end, what was long feared and ardently fought for came to be –and UVA is a better institution for it.
If you are able to come to Grounds, take the Women's History at UVA tour offered by the University Guide Service to explore a refreshed, critical, and intersectional understanding of the women who shaped the University. You can find tour dates for Women's History Month among the events listed on this site. For visits in months other than March, you can arrange a tour date through the Guides website.
To experience the history of women on Grounds from anywhere, take the virtual Women's Education at UVA tour, available among the Walking Tours of Grounds hosted by the UVA Library.
